108MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX mobile camera sensor to debut on a Xiaomi device

VGA cameras were quite cool a few years back, but now they would only make us smile. There already smartphones in the works with 64GB cameras, and it seems that things don’t even stop here. The 108MP Samsung mobile camera was just unveiled and it is safe to say that it will be able to uncover even the smallest details of any scenery. The ISOCELL Bright HMX is the first mobile image sensor to cross the 100MP threshold. Even though Samsung is the manufacturer of the amazingly sharp camera sensors, it seems that a Xiaomi handset will be the first to actually sport one.

Besides being the first smartphone camera sensor to go beyond 100MP, the 108MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX is also the first device of its kind to adopt a large 1/1.33-inch size. Due to this, the sensor can absorb more light in low-lit settings and its pixel-merging Tetracell technology allows the sensor to imitate big-pixel sensors. The results are brighter 27Mp images. The sensor also works extremely well in brighter conditions, as its Smart-ISO is able to switch to a low-ISO and this improves pixel-saturation, producing vivid photographs. The Smart-ISO is also responsible for using high ISO in low-lit settings. This reduces noise and produces clearer images. Naturally, the new sensor also revolutionizes mobile video recording. According to the company, the 108MP Samsung mobile camera sensor is able to record videos at up to 6 resolution, and it does this without losses in field-of-view.

According to Lin Bin, co-founder and president of Xiaomi, the partnership between the two companies will not stop at delivering the 108MP Samsung mobile sensor. The partners will reportedly also bring along a platform through which smartphone users will be able to create unique content.

The 108MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor will go into mass production later this month. This means that we could see the Xiaomi handset that will first sport the camera sensor sometime in the fall, possibly just before the holiday season.
