New Alienware m15 and m17 are great but lack the modular components of the Area-51m
The Alienware Area- 51m that Alienware announced at CES 2019 was definitely the best gaming laptop the company ever delivered. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before it announced something even greater. The Alienware m15 and m17 are thinner, faster variants of the Area-51m. However, they do lack the modular components of their sibling. The company just unveiled the new laptops which look a lot like the smaller siblings of the Area-51m. The design is strikingly similar, only slimmed down. Thankfully, the speed of the devices is not lower than the one of the Area-51m, instead, Alienware made them even faster, which every gamer will appreciate.
The two new models only differ in size. Naturally, the Alienware m15 has a smaller display, so its case is smaller too, and the m17 is slightly larger. While these are the slimmest gaming laptops Alienware has ever delivered, they are not exactly paper thin. Then again, they are gaming laptops that need a certain level of ruggedness and they are perfect for what they were built for: ensuring a divine gaming experience. The one major difference between the two is that the 15-inch model is also available with a 4K 60Hz OLED panel, while the 17-inch model only offers 60Hz or 144Hz 1080p panels.
Under the hood of the Alienware m15 and m17 gamers will find Intel’s 9th Gen Core mobile processors and NVIDIA’s GeForce GPUs with Max-Q design. As for the DRAM and storage, the new Alienware m15 and m17 gaming laptops can pack up to 16 GB of DDR4-2666 memory as well as up to 4 TB of NVMe storage (with dual drive options). The laptops are equipped with with a 6-phase digital VRM for the CPU, as well as a separate 8-phase digital VRM setup for the GPU. The devices got a brand new cooling system, which features thick copper and zinc alloy heat pipes, new fans, and massive air intake and air exhaust openings.
Users should take a serious thought before choosing the features of the devices, as what they buy is what they get. The new models don’t allow users to easily replace parts, as they could with the Alienware Area-51m. This seems to be the only downside to the new models, as overall they are pretty amazing. The new devices will become available for purchase in only two weeks, on June 11. The starting price for both models is $1,499.
